What strikes me from way outside the loop is how unstable the Republican "coalition" is and how untethered from realities on the ground in Republican-run states. Fwiw, I turned 30 the year Reagan took office so it was glaringly obvious to me what the Reagan vote was mostly about: backlash against civil rights, women's rights, and the erosion of straight white male superiority. (What the Reagan administration actually did was something else again.) And that "Keep your government hands off my Medicare" sign has stuck in my mind for decades as an indication of just how ignorant much of the U.S. citizenry was -- even before the rise of Fox and eventually social media made it much, much worse.
Trump's executive orders are all coming right out of Project 2025 and they have a great deal in common with the neoreactionary worldview of Musk, his fellow techno-fascists and the 'Dark Enlightenment': Subvert democracy and grant absolute power to the executive branch, corporations and billionaires. Dworkin just interviewed Michael Cohen who explained that Trump was happy to let Musk do the dirty work of tearing the government apart because Trump will take credit if it's successful or blame Musk if it all blows up in his face. This is, as Paul Krugman pointed out, autogolpe or self-coup, but in this coalition of billionaire grifters, they are all out to advance their own personal interests and will happily destroy the country to that end.
