One of my December rituals, generally one of the last things I do before the holiday break, is going through all of my content from the past year. Primarily, I do it for best-of posts like this one, but it’s also a helpful exercise for me. I can identify patterns in the news cycle and the themes I covered frequently. I can see how I’ve changed as a writer and activist, alongside how the world has changed. How my thinking has evolved and how my interests have shifted. Next week, I’m planning to do a rundown of the most important newsletters of the year.
As part of my content audit, I also review the articles I share. Every year, the ICYMI section becomes more challenging to compile. There are fewer outlets, fewer reporters on the beat, and far less research being done. This year, the media at times felt like it was completely collapsing on itself. But there are still bright spots, pieces that live rent-free in my head, and ideas that I hope get more attention. Here are my favorite articles from the last year.
How Right-Wing Media is Like Improv Theater (The Conversation) This resonated with me as a way to think about Right-Wing Media, particularly how it manages to turn everything into outrage bait.
‘Headed for Technofascism’: the Rightwing Roots of Silicon Valley (The Guardian) Incredible essay from Becca Lewis, a researcher whose been warning us about Silicon Valley and the platforms it built for over a decade now.
